Germany’s most north-eastern Land has an exceptional
landscape of lowland plains full of
lakes and
chalk cliffs–
it once inspired artists such as Caspar David Friedrich and Fritz
Reuter to romantic declarations of love in pictures and writing.
Situated on the Baltic Sea coast, shipping, ports, and maritime
industries are still very important – as they were during the Hanse
period. One of the main branches of the economy are the shipyards and
their supply industry. Other important industries include agriculture,
food industry, timber industry, tourism and the growing Life
Science-Cluster
BioCon Valley. The region has a well established
infrastructure with dense and modern motor- and railways as well as
several airports. Complementing existing north-south motorways, the new
east-west connection will be completed by end 2005. It passes through
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern linking it better with Hamburg and Szczecin, the
economic and administrative capital of Western Pomerania in Poland.
Our beautiful region with its 286 nature reserves and 144 landscape
reserves and its diverse coastal and lake landscape is very inviting.
Already in 1793, Heiligendamm
near Bad Doberan
was established as the first seaside resort by the grand duke of
Mecklenburg. In 2007 it will host the G-8 summit. As the region is very
close to the capital Berlin, a growing number of people are visiting on
short breaks. Young and old are discovering Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as
location for water sports, walking and adventure tours in the cities
and countryside. The region also has a lot to offer culturally: museums,
castles and
festivals, as well as historic cities, from which
Stralsund and
Wismar belong to the
UNESCO World Heritage since 2002. Tourism has increased so much
over the years that the Land is now one of the most appreciated holiday
destinations in Germany.
